Today's reading: NEHEMIAH 10-11 ACTS 4:1-22
What Can We Do?
The Book of Acts--The church of Jesus Christ was up and working. The disciples were empowered by the Holy Spirit promised by Jesus. It was all happening just as Jesus had said it would.
No one was trying to hide anything. Jesus had told the disciples what would happen to them and they knew what they had to do. So, on the way to the temple to pray, they healed a lame man. They might as well have set fire to the city hall as much attention as they got.
The next day the temple leaders called a meeting and everyone who was anybody was there. Then they got Peter and John in front of them(after they had kept them in jail all night) and told the disciples never to speak in the name of Jesus again or there would be bad consequences.
Peter and John were full of God's power and Peter spoke:
“Rulers and leaders of the people, if we have been brought to trial today for helping a sick man, put under investigation regarding this healing, I’ll be completely frank with you—we have nothing to hide. By the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the One you killed on a cross, the One God raised from the dead, by means of his name this man stands before you healthy and whole. Jesus is ‘the stone you masons threw out, which is now the cornerstone.’ Salvation comes no other way; no other name has been or will be given to us by which we can be saved, only this one.”
Acts, chapter 4, continues:13-14 They couldn’t take their eyes off them—Peter and John standing there so confident, so sure of themselves! Their fascination deepened when they realized these two were laymen with no training in Scripture or formal education. They recognized them as companions of Jesus, but with the man right before them, seeing him standing there so upright—so healed!—what could they say against that?
15-17 They sent them out of the room so they could work out a plan. They talked it over: “What can we do...?
They continued to try to shut these men up but nothing worked. The cat was out of the bag.(2000 years later, 2.2 billion Christians worldwide). In a few hours after the man's healing, 5000 people had come to know Jesus-5000 more converts for the Body of Christ!
Jesus knew what would happen and the lives, work, and suffering His people would experience down through the ages.
But the world which denies Christ still asks, "What can we do?". It has been a losing battle ever since the stone was rolled away.
But--it is still a battle. It is for us to ask of God everyday, "What shall we do?"
What shall we do?
As we ask God for daily bread and growth and forgiveness, what does come next? Do we simply go about our days putting one foot after the other without asking God what to do next?
Think about that for just a minute. What does God want us to do?
Relax-get a breath-be still-
God has a plan-have you asked Him lately what it is for today?
Go ahead-ask...
...because He loves us...
Father in Heaven,
Have mercy on me and forgive me for not asking all the time-give me the desire to listen and seek Your guidance and will. What is it You have for me to do today?
Hallelujah to the king of Kings!
In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen
