The Vacuum
How much of God do you want? How much can you carry? Jesus said that if you hunger and thirst after righteousness, you shall be filled. Well, how full are you?
These seem to some hard questions. Some will think them rude. Still others will think these questions are from a radical and fanatical mind. We are simply having a truth check. Jesus said you can have as much as you want.
We do have as much as we want.
"The average Christian is so cold and so contented with His wretched condition that there is no vacuum of desire into which the blessed Spirit can rush in satisfying fullness". A.W. Tozer; Born After Midnight, 8.
Children grow up in America hearing well meaning parents tell them that they can do anything in this life that they want. And they do. They do anything they want badly enough. Some desire to be teachers and so become teachers. Some want desire to have a lot of money and do-even if they have it only long enough to go to jail...
Jesus spoke the 'sermon on the mount' and since that time we have diluted it all to say, you can have anything or become anything you want as long as you belong to Jesus. With God on your 'side', you are blessed.
Let's back up and see what the scripture really says.
Psalm 37:4 ►Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
The choice must be made to delight in the Lord. How much delight do you really have in the Lord? Really? Most do not know what that means. Delight means to be 'greatly pleased' or 'captivated'.
If you have made up your mind to be greatly pleased with the Lord you will be. Some say, "As soon as I am blessed, I will have a reason to be greatly pleased with the Lord". This is not what the scripture says.
It says when we delight in the Lord, then we will be given the desires in our hearts-God will give us desire for His purposes. Remember this: "He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His namesake"?
When we delight in the Lord, He will show us His desires-He will give us the desires in our hearts-He will place the desires in our hearts that He wants us to have.
When we delight in the Lord, He will fill us with a hunger and thirst for righteousness.
Luke 11:13 ►If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
It is silly to think that God will empower those who are not obedient.
It is time to pray for more-more desire to be delighted in our Lord. First things first-first, delight-fall in love with the Lord; then, from the desire He has placed in your heart, present yourself as a living sacrifice.
Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Renew you minds in Him. We just need to get a grip on reality-a real grip that will not let go.
...because He loves us...
Father in Heaven,
I confess, my earthly desires occupy my mind. I want to really delight in you so I have Your desires in my heart and I am at peace with it.
Gracious and loving God.
In the name of Christ Jesus,
Amen
