Make it Habit
After you hallow God's name and take up your cross and commit again to obedience-after you voice dependence on God for physical and spirtual provision-After you confess your sins-after you ask God to shield you from temptation-what do you pray next? Where do you go from that point?
Aside from the fact that your secret prayer time is part of your daily schedule and the fact that this is a time of humbling yourself under God's hand(1 Peter 5:6&7)and is so essential, you need to keep some kind of a list of folks with needs and folks you love and know.
At the top of every private prayer list should be those who are your least favorite human beings. Pray for those you don't like and who don't like you. Why? Because-your own heart needs to change toward them. Make every effort to achieve peace(Ephesians 4:3-6). If you are sincere, God will bring about a profound change in your heart toward your enemies.
Secret Personal needs can come next. As you pray for wants and wishes, you will see God change your heart slowly to His desires.
After all this, you just need to be humble before God. If you are genuinely of a humble heart, God will hear it all. But at some point be still-take it in-God is God and you are there because that is what He wants. Enjoy it. It is the closest to heaven we will get on this earth.
...because He loves us...
Father in Heaven,
Great and endless God, I die to self, lead me. Forgive me my weak attitude. Keep my mind, eyes and ears from evil. Teach me to love my enemies.
You are Lord of all,
In the name of Christ Jesus,
Amen
