Daily Bread

"Give us this day, our daily bread".(Matthew 6:11)

What is in our daily bread? We think of food, of course, but that is obviously not all that God intended for that to mean as we pray and live.

Daily bread means sustenance-the maintaining of someone or something in life or existence.

So, the Lord wants us to pray for all that sustains life. That involves so much.

Food, shelter, power, education, medicine, government-these are a few of the big ones.

But what about peace? Peace sustains life. Lives are lost everyday around the world for lack of peace. But real peace, however, is basically personal.

Anyone who has ever been blessed with inner peace could never be guilty of depriving others of peace, they would have done all to keep peace around them.

Matthew 5:9 New International Version (NIV)

9 Blessed are the peacemakers,

for they will be called children of God.

People who really know and follow the Prince of Peace really want to live in peace. They want folks around them to know His peace.

Isaiah 9:6 ►

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Ephesians 2:14

For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has torn down the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments and decrees. He did this to create in Himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace

Having said all this, peace is just one part of our daily bread. So we pray for whatever God has to sustain us for this day and we must pray that we are open to receive it.

Think about your yesterday-yesterdays-and what God provided for you to be sustained. Think about all of it.

The big thing about praying for 'daily bread' is that we are voicing a total dependence on our Lord God for the provision of all bread around us-all sustenance-all that gives us life.

God is our Life. Jesus said it, "I am the way, the truth and the Life..."(John 14)

...because He loves us...

Father in Heaven,

Forgive me for depending on the world's provision.

I want to depend on You-not me-not the world-You. You are my ultimate and only real provider. I take up my cross.

Mighty God of Peace and mercy!!

In the name of Christ Jesus,

Amen
