But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;
Memory of the month: And they said to one another, "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?" —Luke 24:32
Today's reading: DEUTERONOMY 10-12 MARK 12:1-27
Reflection
In Deuteronomy, chapter 11, verses 18 through 20, Moses is telling the children of God how important it is to remember all the things God has said through Him and how they should obey all the laws and rules and commands.
" So let what I’m saying sink deeply into your hearts and souls. Do whatever it takes to remember what I’m telling you: tie a reminder on your hand or put a reminder on your forehead where you’ll see it all the time,"
The cry of my heart is that I take God to heart with all that I am. Moses said for all for us to let the words, the words God had given Moses to speak, to sink deeply into our hearts and souls. He said to let it happen. It means we have a choice to make. Will you let God's word sink deeply into your heart or will you let the gods of this world steal your attention away?
Then Moses says something that sounds a little fanatical-
"put a reminder on your forehead where you’ll see it all the time..."
Why on our foreheads? Think about it. In those ancient times, they had primitive glass. They had come from Egypt who had primitive mirrors. They knew what their own reflection was. Every Time they looked into still water they would see themselves. Think about today. We cannot drive a car without seeing our own reflection in the rear view mirror or in seeing ourselves in the windows as we leave the vehicles. We have mirrors in every bathroom and many other places in our homes and businesses. People are consumed with looking at themselves.
What if we all had a little pouch attached to our foreheads with scripture cards inside? Sounds fanatical, right? I have not seen it in my lifetime. But, what if we could imagine a reminder attached to our forehead. One no one else could see. What if we wanted to seek God enough to imagine His word tattooed to our faces? Sound wierd? It is just imaginary-but this is how God wants our desire for Him to be.
God wants us to look in the mirror and see that we are made in His image. He wants us to look at a person whose soul belongs to Him. He wants us to see a person whose desire for His righteousness is far greater than the desire for anything else in this world. He wants us to look at our reflection and see Jesus in ourselves-not for our fortune but for His glory.
What would be the first thing that you would write on your own forehead about God-no one else can see it. Write the truth there just now. See it in your mind everytime you see your reflection. What is there?
Love Him with all you are.
...because He loves us...
Father in Heaven,
I have sin that Keeps me from seeing You in me. Forgive me. Thank You great God for having mercy on me.
