Work On The Fire

As I was clearing some brush years ago, I found an old wood stove broken in pieces. I thought how sad-it was the source of heat and cooked meals-it fed a family.

Jesus told the woman at the well, John 4, 23 “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.”

Many think that this ‘spirit’ is the Holy Spirit. But God made us in His image and we have a spirit. Before Christ, it is like a wood stove without fire-useless and lost-cold and pointless.

But when Jesus saves us-when we accept His eternal truth for us, The Holy Spirit, along with God’s consuming fire, moves in and all is changed.

The fuel for the fire is the word of God and the fire must be fed-but-the ‘draft’ must be adjusted-how much air is let in and how much goes out. The air is the truth-the power of the Holy Spirit.

I believe our worship is the heat that our stove(spirit) produces-the part outside our stove that the world feels-the love we share-our actions in obedience to our Lord’s leading-our evangelism- our living worship.

But it all goes back to our ‘tending the fire’. In John 4:31, The disciples said to Jesus, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”

They were with Jesus all the time and yet He told them he had food they did not know.

No matter how much we think we know, there is so much we need to learn-so much. We cannot get lazy or lax in our feeding the fire. We must seek and ask the Holy Spirit. We will burn as hot as God wants us to burn and our witness for Him will be in His truth and so will our outpouring of worship.

God will do it.

Father in Heaven,

Mighty God-our consuming fire, great is Your name and kingdom. Give me more of You today. Forgive me for being afraid to burn hot. Lead me away from being cold and artificial.

Fire of my heart and righteous Master,
