While He Talked

Their leader of three years had been killed-publicly-sanctioned by their government-a government which took much pride in civil order and justice-by the religious leaders of the faith they had been a part of since birth.

It was, in their minds, over. They walked away from that place back to their home a few miles away. Think of the heaviness of their grief. Think about walking miles in that heaviness and add to it the fear that what had happened to Jesus would be coming for them.

A man these two do not recognize catches up with them and asked them what was wrong. "Surely, this guy must have been under a rock to be so oblivious to miss all that had happened," they thought.

They could not recognize Jesus-why? They were so heavy with grief and worry and sorrow that they would not look Him in the face. It is hard to see out of a hole that deep.

Jesus did what Jesus still does. He took the scriptures and brought light and strength and excitement into their darkness. He did this with authority in God's tender, merciful manner.(Luke 24)

Two times in scripture, Jesus acts as if to walk on by. Once when He walked on the water(Mark 6:48) and this time(Luke 24:28). Both times, voices urged Him to stay. He stayed, eyes were opened and hearts lifted.

And they said to one another, "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?" —Luke 24:32

Jesus is always near-rain or shine. Will you let Him walk on by unnoticed?

Our focus must be redirected to His righteousness-get our eyes off self-we must look to Him.

We must welcome Him.

We must ask Him. It is the act of humility-to say, "Lord I need You".

1 Peter 5:6&7 Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God that may lift you up in due time, casting all your anxieties on Him for He cares for you.

Humbling means to let go of fear and let Him have it. Confess the depression and let Him deal with it. Let go of control and let Him have it. When our are hearts focused on Him, our hearts will burn within us.

Our God is a consuming fire. Hebrews 12:29

...because He loves us...

Father in Heaven,

Forgive me my self focus. Turn my heart and mind to You and burn within me.

Gracious and kind Father!

In the name of Jesus Christ,

Amen
